A woman in Australia was supposedly paid $7 million to keep quiet about being raped in an Airbnb rental, reporters say.
The 29-year-old woman had been in Manhattan at the time the incident occurred. She and her friends had gotten the keys for their accommodations, but the woman went back to the room by herself. That’s when she encountered the 24-year-old suspect who was reported to have raped the woman.
Airbnb responded by moving her to a new hotel and flying her mom out to meet her in New York. The company also paid for the women’s flights home, and covered related health care costs.
Then they wrote her a $7 million check to keep quiet about it all for two years, reporters say.
