The fourth Capitol Police officer lost his life to suicide after the Jan 6. riot

Yet another officer who had been defending the Capitol during the January 6 attacks lost his life to suicide, the Metropolitan Police Department reported yesterday.

According to officials, Officer Kyle DeFreytag took his life in July.

“I am writing to share tragic news that Officer Kyle DeFreytag of the 5th District was found deceased last evening,” wrote MPD Chief Robert J. Contee III in a message to his force a few weeks ago.

MPD also announced yesterday that Officer Gunther Hashida had committed suicide last week. Hashida, who had been with the department for decades, had also protected the Capitol during the riots.

These two deaths mark the third and fourth people to take their own lives following the insurrection.
