The legendary Florida State football coach, Bobby Bowden, who transformed his school’s reputation, has died at 91 years old, his family says.
Bowden passed away on Sunday morning, at home, in Tallahassee, Florida, of pancreatic cancer.
“It truly was peaceful,” his son, Terry, said in a text message.
The Hall of Fame icon had disclosed that he had a terminal illness earlier this year.
“I’ve always tried to serve God’s purpose for my life, on and off the field, and I am prepared for what is to come,” he had said, then. “My wife, Ann, and our family have been life’s greatest blessing. I am at peace.”
During his career, Bowden totaled nearly 400 wins and earned countless other accolades.
“Florida State University has lost a legend in the passing of Bobby Bowden,” said the school’s president. “Coach Bowden built a football dynasty and raised the national profile of Florida State University, and he did it with class and a sense of humor.”
