Nebraska man’s family say his suicide was caused by being called a racist

Former Nebraska bar owner Jake Gardner, who was white, committed suicide after being charged with manslaughter and other offenses. He shot and killed 22-year-old James Scurlock, who was Black, last May.

Now, Gardner’s parents are suing prosecutors, saying that their son killed himself because of claims that he was racist. They filed their lawsuit against the Douglas County Attorney’s Office, and want money for compensatory and punitive damages, reporters say.

The fatal shooting followed George Floyd’s May 25 death, when the former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin, suffocated Floyd with his knee. Chauvin, who has since been convicted and sentenced to more than 22 years behind bars, sparked protests at the time.

So far, the family’s lawsuit has been dubbed as “unfounded.”

What are the top highlights in the market this morning?

Investors continued to digest the commentary that Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell offered yesterday after the central bank closed its two-day meeting. Because of that, futures were a mixed bag this morning, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbing more than 140 points, while Nasdaq 100 futures dipped slightly, and the S&P 500 remained flat.

Shares of Facebook and Paypal fell in the premarket because of predictions that growth would stall out over the coming months. On the other hand, Ford’s sunnier forecast meant shares increased in the premarket.

“The market is understanding we are having a blowout quarter here compared to a year ago,” said one strategist. “What’s much more important this season is the guidance we’re getting on quarters ahead, as the economy settles out into what might be the new normal.”

A Florida man is in a coma after a brutal beating over music

A Florida man’s request that his neighbors turn down their music sent him to the hospital and put him in a medically induced coma, officials say. The 42-year-old sustained fractures to his face, and even got an infection while at the hospital. He’s been there well over a month.

The incident occurred on June 14. As of Tuesday, healthcare officials were still waiting for Frank Penkava’s condition to improve so that they can perform surgery. They are unsure whether he sustained brain damage in addition to his physical injuries.

His sister said she was only able to recognize Penkava because of his tattoos.

“There is no reason for what they did to him,” she said. “I understand that people get into altercations all the time and people’s emotions are high, especially over the last year, but there was nothing to warrant what they did to him.”

This tragic incident reflects growing violence in the U.S. In the first half of the year, murders increased almost 15% when compared with last year.

How does Donald Trump attack President Biden on the new mask mandate?

As you are probably aware, the CDC updated its mask policy yesterday. The agency reverted back to requiring even vaccinated Americans to wear the face coverings in most situations. And former President Donald Trump isn’t having it.

“We won’t go back,” he wrote in a statement. “We won’t mask our children. Joe Biden and his Administration learned nothing from the last year. Brave Americans learned how to safely and responsibly live and fight back. Don’t surrender to [the virus]. Don’t go back! Why do Democrats distrust the science? Don’t let this happen to our children or our Country.”

The updated guidance directly impacts students, according to the director of the CDC.

“CDC recommends that everyone in K-12 schools wear a mask indoors, including teachers, staff, students, and visitors, regardless of vaccination status. Children should return to full-time, in-person learning in the fall with proper prevention strategies in place,” said Director Rochelle Walensky.

For example, Boxer was interviewed on the network just this past Saturday to discuss the Jan. 6 committee. But, if you wanted to learn more about Boxer’s attack, which involved two thieves and a stolen cell phone, you wouldn’t find any information whatsoever on that station.

There has to be a reason for skipping a story that was so clearly relevant and timely, right?

What are the top highlights in the market this morning?

Futures were muted this morning as investors await the Federal Reserve’s updated policy statement, out today at 2 p.m., followed by Chairman Jerome Powell’s commentary at 2:30 p.m.

Big Tech companies are continuing to report better-than-expected earnings, meanwhile, with Apple falling during premarket trading. Shares of Microsoft and Alphabet, however, rose during the premarket.

McDonald’s also boasted blow-out earnings today, though shares fell slightly this morning.

Pfizer announced $7.8 billion in vaccine shot sales in the second quarter alone, though shares of the drug company dipped about 1% during the premarket. The vaccine sales forecast for 2021 was increased to $33.5 billion as officials weigh whether yet another jab will be necessary.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden is determining whether or not federal workers would be required to either get the shot or endure regular virus screenings.

A TikTok star is hurt and friend is dead after a movie theater shooting

The 19-year-old social media star known on TikTok as itsanthonymichael, or in real life as Anthony Barajas, was on life support following a movie theater shooting last night, officials say.

His friend, 18-year-old Rylee Goodrich, was fatally shot as the pair watched The Forever Purge in a movie theater southeast of Los Angeles, according to authorities.

Apparently, Barajas and Goodrich were discovered by workers just after 9:30 p.m. last night, as they cleaned the movie theater. Officials were unable to locate a gun, and have yet to share a motive or who the possible shooter might be.

“I’m being told right now there were six tickets purchased for that movie showing,” one officer said. “We’re asking for anyone who might have been inside that movie, or a theater adjacent to that, for any information at all.”

Why Biden tells a reporter “You are such a pain in the neck”

When the president called her a “pain in the neck,” NBC reporter Kelly O’Donnell appeared to take it as a compliment.

“The president called me a ‘pain in the neck’ (with a smile),” she wrote on Twitter. “As I pressed him on a NEW mandate for doctors at the Department of Veteran Affairs hospitals to get the [virus] vaccine. He did not respond when I pressed if there would be further federal required vaccines.”

O’Donnell asked her question after the department announced that some of its employees would be required to get the vaccine, whether they wanted it or not.

“You are such a pain in the neck but I’m going to answer your question because I’ve known you so long,” President Joe Biden said as he took questions from the press after a meeting with the Iraqi prime minister. “It has nothing to do with Iraq.”

The meeting was focused on the U.S. presence in Iraq, among other issues.

These Texas firefighters rescue eight teens stuck on a roller coaster

A 47-year-old roller coaster got stuck this weekend, leaving eight teenagers stranded 60 feet in the air, authorities say.

The ride, called El Bandido, is located in the Western Playland Amusement Park that straddles the Texas and New Mexico border. Police arrived on the scene just before 9 p.m. on Saturday and helped the passengers climb a ladder truck down to safety.

From start to finish, the ordeal took about two hours. No one sustained any injuries during that time.

“Waiting that long was pretty wild for us, but we were all grateful that we got down safely,” one passenger said.

The owner of the amusement park removed the two cars that sparked the problem before the ride resumed operation on Sunday.
