Meanwhile, in Washington, President-elect Joe Biden is set to be sworn in as the 46th president of this country at noon today, exactly two weeks after the violent riot at the Capitol building. Biden is slated to sign a dozen executive orders before day’s end. Also today, control of the Senate will officially shift when Democrats Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff become the newest members of the chamber this afternoon. And President Donald Trump issued lots of pardons yesterday, including one for Steve Bannon, who served on his first presidential campaign, and as an advisor. The president will not attend the inauguration ceremony today and has already uploaded his farewell video.

Right now, this country is logging over 200,000 new infections each day and more than 3,000 deaths. At the same time, a new mutation was discovered to be even more contagious. The creators of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine found that their drug is likely to protect against that variation of the virus (which is called B.1.1.7.) as well. Though the study has not undergone peer review just yet, it concluded that there was “no biologically significant difference in neutralization activity” when it came to the vaccine’s impact on the new strain versus the first one.
