INVESTOR INSIGHTS – Volatility Index (VIX)

We briefly touched on the VIX in yesterday’s issue.

I said that it’s one of the most valuable indicators. It is like staring into a crystal ball for the stock market.

It measures the fear in the marketplace. When the VIX is rising, investors are scared. When the VIX is falling, investors are bullish.

I use it as a contrary indicator to identify reversal points at market extremes.

How?

I wait for the VIX to generate a buy or sell signal.

Buy signal – VIX closes above its upper Bollinger Band and then closes back inside.

Sell signal – VIX closes below its lower Bollinger Band and then closes back inside.

Bollinger Bands measure the most probable trading range for a stock (or an index). When the price moves outside of its Bollinger Bands, it indicates an extreme condition.

Don’t worry if this sounds a little confusing. Let me show you a few examples.

Take a look at this chart:

The blue circles are “VIX buy signals.”

And here is how they played out…

This is a corresponding chart of the S&P 500. You can see that each VIX buy signal marked a short-term bottom for the S&P.

Uber’s stock fell 18% in its first two days of trading. On heavy volume.

And yesterday, it finally got a little bounce…

Take a look:

I’m not surprised. Uber has large losses and went public during a period of higher market volatility.

But I am surprised about Beyoncé…

Why?

Because according to this article, Beyoncé once performed at a private Uber party. And instead of her fee ($6m), got a small equity stake in the company.

The rumor has it her stake could be worth $300 million today…

If you find this interesting… you might want to tune in tomorrow as well…

Why? 

Because I will be writing about Amazon’s new “lights out” warehouse that could put UPS out of business… 

TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME

Joe Biden attended an event in New Hampshire.

And he had an interesting exchange with an attendee:

Attendee: I have a very severe case of what’s called Trump Derangement Syndrome… He is an illegitimate president — in my mind. That’s it! I think all the talk about impeachment and what the Democrats should do, that’s fine…

Biden: Would you be my vice presidential candidate? Folks, look, I absolutely agree…

CRAZY THINGS LIBERALS WILL SAY

Attorney General William Barr strikes back… FBI could be in trouble.

Mr. Barr used the term “spying.”

Specifically, he has said he wants to review whether the FBI had grounds for spying on the Trump campaign, for example, when it sought a surveillance warrant against a former campaign adviser.

And he put the top federal prosecutor in Connecticut, John Durham, on the case.

Mr. Durham seems to be the right man for the job. He has a history of investigating potential wrongdoing among national security officials…

I can’t wait to see what liberals have to say about this…

I want to kick things off with my views on investing.

Many investors see opportunities as events — where results are, at best, a flash in the pan.

They chase the latest stock picks, home-runs and get-rich-quick schemes. They try this and that, get bored, then move onto the next shiny object.

And sometimes they get lucky and earn a fortune.

But because it was built on a foundation of luck (right place at the right time; it happens), it’s not repeatable, and eventually they crash and burn.

I take a different approach.

And I’ll tell you more about it tomorrow…

INVESTOR INSIGHTS – China Trade War Update

It was a busy weekend.

I followed the China trade talks back and forth.

And I don’t consider it as “constructive.”

It’s clear that Trump won’t budge.

In fact, Trump ordered Robert Lighthizer, U.S. Trade Representative, to begin the process of imposing tariffs on all remaining Chinese imports (an additional $300 billion of goods).

China said it would retaliate. And they are not afraid to fight.

Trump’s response:

S&P futures declined as much as 1.1% at the open on Sunday night (at 6pm).

Should you be worried?

I don’t think so.

I consider 5%+ market pull-backs normal in any big rally.

In fact, I think they become inevitable when “negative news” hits an already over-bought market.

But I don’t think the rally is over.

And I’m focused on identifying lower market levels at which I might buy more of my favorite stocks.

It all started with an Instagram post.

TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME

Donald Trump Jr. was served a subpoena to testify… again.

He already testified for 25+ hours before multiple Congressional committees in connection with the Russia election investigation.  

He answered questions and was cleared in the Mueller report after a 2-year (almost unlimited) investigation.

But the Senate Intelligence Committee wants more.

They are bringing him back based on Michael Cohen’s testimony.

I don’t know about you, but I think it’s time to move on…

The law prohibits abortions in the state after a heartbeat is detected.

INVESTOR INSIGHTS – Bitcoin rally continues…

Bitcoin is up 10 day in a row.

Take a look:

And Mike Novogratz is excited.

He is a former Goldman Sachs partner and Fortress fund manager.

And 2018 might have been one of his toughest years in investing.  

Why?

His crypto fund, Galaxy Digital, has finally released the 2018 financial results.

And it’s not pretty.

Total loss (realized and unrealized) has grown to $272.2 million.

Can he turn it around?

He believes so.

In fact, he expects Bitcoin to triple over the next 18 months.

And return to its all-time high around $20,000.

Both Novogratz and I hope the rally will last…

Over the past decade, Uber revolutionized transportation.

And yesterday its stock started trading.

Interesting stat: Uber is the largest IPO since Alibaba in 2014. Of U.S.-based companies, it’s the largest since Facebook in 2012.

The opening price was $42.

And then the stock tumbled… which was quite unusual.

These are generally carefully calibrated offerings…

And when they don’t perform, it raises questions about investor appetite for

money-losing tech start-ups.

By the end of the day, Uber’s market capitalization stood at $76.5 billion.

Let’s see if Uber is built to last…

INVESTOR INSIGHTS – Market Rally Continues… But Will It Last? 

Buyers are in control of the board stock market.

And I think the market is setting up to make new all-time highs this week

But, I don’t think this move is sustainable.

Let me tell you why.

High yield sector (HYG) is generally a leading indicator of the broader stock market. It can reveal where the stock market is headed over the next few days or weeks.

And for the past few days, HYG has been declining.

In fact, it broke below the 9-day exponential moving average yesterday.

The 9-day, exponential moving average, or “EMA,” is available on any free charting site. (I used stockcharts.com here).

Without getting too technical, it’s just average price the stock has traded over previous 9 trading days. 

I believe it’s the defining line for the short-term momentum.
