Why consumer sentiment is falling to a pandemic-era low

Consumer sentiment is falling fast, a University of Michigan report shows. That index shed 13% from July’s 81.2 reading to land at 70.2 in early August.

That number reflects a new pandemic-era low, and it is the dourest outlook since 2011. The data also fell well below economist expectations for the month.

According to a chief economist at the university, Richard Curtin, the Sentiment Index has only recorded such dramatic dips six other times, and each of those instances was “connected to sudden negative changes in the economy.”

“Consumers have correctly reasoned that the economy’s performance will be diminished over the next several months,” Curtin said. “But the extraordinary surge in negative economic assessments also reflects an emotional response, mainly from dashed hopes that the pandemic would soon end.”

What does he believe will happen next? Should we be worried?

Florida man’s crime spree includes: shoes, two trucks, a four-wheeler, and a forklift

A Florida man is behind bars, with a hefty $88,000 bond, after going on a crime bender, officials say.

According to authorities, the Ocala man stole two trucks, a car, a forklift, a four-wheeler, shoes, cigarettes, and a lighter.

Charles Harrington apparently begins his stealing spree by taking a truck that eventually got stuck in the mud. Then, he took a car and the smokes from another Ocala residence. From there, he set his sights on a four-wheeler.

Police say Harrington took the vehicle to a fernery property, where he asked to drink sprinkler water.

As Biden’s failures snowball, Trump asks: “Do you miss me yet?”

The laundry list of President Joe Biden’s failures is growing by the day.

For one thing, as Fox just reported, insurgents are overtaking several capitals in Afghanistan, just before the last American troops are slated to withdraw.

The southern border is anything but, with over 212,000 illegal immigrants entering this country in July alone. According to a reporter, that’s a 13% increase over a 20-year-record, set in June.

Crime is soaring in areas where Democrats have loudly called for a defunding of the police force.

Inflation is skyrocketing, with last month’s PPI report reflecting a 7.8% increase year-over-year.

Former President Donald Trump released a statement today that asked the question he simply doesn’t have to: “Do you miss me yet?”

Does his question make you wonder whether he’s already setting the stage for his comeback in 2024?

How did a toddler fatally shoot a Florida woman while she was working?

A 21-year-old mother was fatally shot by her toddler while she was working from home on Wednesday, authorities say.

Shamaya Lynn was apparently on a video phone call when the incident occurred. The handgun had been out, and it was loaded, when the child discovered it.

According to police, a coworker on the Zoom call saw the youngster, heard the gunshot, and then saw Lynn fall. She didn’t get back up. That colleague is the one who notified the authorities.

“Officers and paramedics did their best in rendering aid to Mrs. Lynn,” officials said. “But she was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.”

Six people are dead following a shooting in southwest England overnight, authorities say.

According to police, a “serious firearms incident” call came in somewhere around 6 p.m.

Four people had been shot and were pronounced dead on the scene. Police shared that the victims included two men and two women, but have not yet released their identities. A third woman was hospitalized before she died.

The suspected shooter was also pronounced dead on the scene, though authorities have not shared his cause of death yet.

“There have been a number of fatalities at the scene and several other casualties are receiving treatment,” officials said. “A critical incident has been declared. The area has been cordoned off and police believe the situation is contained.”

Do authorities suspect the incident is terror related?

This is a developing story.

Why Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul will likely reveal the hidden nursing home data

After the embattled New York governor announced his resignation earlier this week, his successor hinted that she would release more nursing home data that had been hidden under Andrew Cuomo’s reign.

As you remember, Cuomo had ordered more than 9,000 coronavirus patients to stay in nursing homes across the state, and then he lied about the deaths resulting from his poor judgment. He reported a whopping 8,500 deaths, but that number was actually closer to 15,000.

“Will you release the nursing home data? The nursing home data, in the alleged coverup – will you release it?” a reporter asked Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul during her press conference.

How did she respond?

This woman is arrested for stealing over $800 of fajita and steak

Two women with a craving for fajitas stole more than $800 worth of ingredients from a grocery store recently. On Monday, one of the suspects, 33-year-old Brenda Johana Ruiz, was arrested. A warrant is out for 24-year-old Erika Rene Lopez.

H-E-B security camera footage showed the duo entering the grocer and hiding several meat packages in their purse. They then returned for 25 steaks and more fajita packages.

All in all, their bill, had they paid, would have been a hefty $833.30.

I can’t help but wonder why they wanted so many steaks. What are your thoughts?

What are the top market headlines this morning?

Stock futures were relatively muted this morning after both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 set fresh records yesterday. Investors were digesting yesterday’s consumer price index report, and anticipating the release of today’s wholesale prices data out today.

The Labor Department will release the latest look at jobless claims this morning. A strong read on this front, coupled with a better-than-expected PPI report, could motivate the Federal Reserve to begin tapering talks sooner than expected.

“I say give [Federal Reserve Chairman] Jay Powell the benefit of the doubt,” said Jim Cramer of CNBC. “He’s been right as rain since the pandemic started. His critics have been dead wrong for ages. Powell’s been adamant that we need to wait and see what happens with the Delta variant before he starts raising rates or even tapering.”

A woman stormed off from a wedding to be eaten alive by bears

A Russian woman may have been eaten alive by a pack of bears after angrily leaving a wedding last month, officials say.

The 24-year-old woman, Yana Balobanova, apparently called to report that she was lost in the woods.

Rescue dogs were deployed to try and find her, but at some point, her scent was overtaken by that of bears, experts said. The animal’s footprints were spotted nearby.

Apparently, an argument with another guest prompted her early departure from the party.

“It is no longer possible to hope that the woman will be found alive,” one official said. “If a person accidentally finds themselves between a bear and her cubs, the predator can attack immediately and harshly, without growls and warnings.”
